Not Just Another Journal

Since the dawn of time, God has used so many vessels to speak to mankind. He has used burning bushes, thunder, and even people to communicate His goodness and promises. So it comes as no surprise that He can speak to us through journaling as well. Yes, you read that right. No, I am not crazy. Think back to when you were a teenager. Where did your most coveted secrets, deepest desires, and craziest thoughts go? To your journal of course! And if you were really cool, you had the one with the lock on the front. Your journal knew everything about you and what you were going through. So why not journal now as a Jesus follower? God wants, so much, for us to forge a vulnerable and open relationship with Him. In the folds of those pages, you can pour out your heart to God. You can tell Him all your deepest pain, and the strokes of your pen can hail Him with the mightiest of praises.

Now I know what you're thinking, "I thought you said God can SPEAK to me through journaling!" Be patient! It is about to all make sense.

So let's go back to those teenage journals. If you kept them, what happened when you looked at them as an adult? If you're anything like me, you were in complete awe of how insignificant your problems were and embarrassed that you EVER wrote in that thing! But, most importantly, you saw your GROWTH.

Ah ha! I bet you know where I am going with this!

As we journal as Jesus followers, we are pouring our soul out to God in the right here and now. We talk about PRESENT hurts and PRESENT praises. Every time we put pen to paper, we are literally going before the Lord with our heart and mind, open to receive whatever it is He has for us.

So how SWEET is it, when you are 5 months down the line, and you go back and see the GROWTH and BLESSINGS that God provided you through the most amazing ways! You look at those times you were in seemingly hopeless situations, but now you are sitting on the other side. THAT is how God speaks through your journaling. In those quiet moments where you're writing your desires, He speaks. When you are pouring your pain onto empty pages, He speaks. There isn't a word you write that He is not present in.

So here is my challenge to you: just journal. It can be a fancy leather backed journal that you write in with a dip pen, or even just a ream of notebook paper with a knife whittled pencil. Whatever the medium, just journal it out. Be vulnerable and open in between those pages. They are meant for you and God, so pour your heart out to Him. Do it in the quiet stillness of the morning or the silent solitude of the night. And begin to listen as He speaks to you through the scribbling of your hand across the page.
